Architectural Shingles

Kelly McNeill - Monday, September 21, 2015

What are the most popular shingles for roofing replacement?  By far the most popular shingles being used in and around the Denver area would be Architectural shingles.  The most popular color choices are manufactured by Owens Corning and the GAF Corporation.  These shingles are much heavier than the older 3-tab shingles and have many benefits over the 3-tabs.  There are also different grades of Architectural shingles including impact resistant shingles which can save you money on your homeowners policy.  However, always check with your insurance carrier to see if they will offer you a reduction in your rates with the impact resistant shingle.  We recommend you look at all of your options - there are numerous colors, designs and patterns available to enhance your homes look and value.  Call the Denver Roofing Company to learn about all of your roofing options.  303-720-1934

What is the most popular roofing style in Denver?

Jack Core - Monday, June 01, 2015

The most popular roofing style is called a "Gable Roof".  However, you have other popular roofing options such as flat roofs, shed roofs, Hipped roofs, Mansard Roofs, Gabrel Roofs, Bonnet roofs and more.  Lets get back to one of the most popular roofs "Gable Roofs".  A gable roof has two sides that slope down from a central or top ridge.  A gable roof is simple to build and suitable for many climates.  A gable roof can be vented and does not collect precipitation and/or debris like fallen leaves.  With a proper slope typically 4/12 or higher in pitch the gable roof will last a long time with a quality roof installation.  The gable roof also allows space for an attic which is great for proper insulation.  Also, always remember a properly insulated attic and a properly ventilated roof will help eliminate ice dams from forming on your roof eaves.  A gable roof is a GREAT ROOF!

Starter Shingles for Denver Roofing

Jack Core - Friday, February 13, 2015

Starter shingles are a very important aspect of any shingle roof installation.  Many Denver roofing contractors do not use starter shingle which leaves you with a sub-par roof.  The reason starter shingles are important is that they properly seal your roof at the eaves and rakes.  The starter strip has an asphalt sealing strip that will bond and seal down the first course of shingle along all your eaves or gutter lines and also up your rakes "Basically the entire perimeter of your roof".  It's just as important to use starter strips up the rakes to eliminate the chance of wind uplift and damage to your shingle roof.  Properly installed felt paper and starter strips is the first step to a professionally installed shingle roof.  Ask your Denver Roofing Contractor if they use starter strips.  You can trust our company The Denver Roofing Company to do all the right things when it comes to your roof.

Why are roof flashings important?

Jack Core - Wednesday, December 03, 2014
Roof flashings are some of the most important elements of any roof.  The weather in Denver can be violent at times and can damage are roofs very easily.  This is where roof flashings come into play.  Roof flashing help protect our roofs in different ways especially around entry or exit points and where roof lines meet walls.  Another great example of roof flashings would be around chimneys.  One of the common flashings will discuss here is called "drip edge"  drip edge goes around the perimeter of your house and typically comes in colors to match the shingle or the color of your fascia.  Drip edge is mostly used to create clean roofing lines and give a nice finished appearance to your new roof.  Drip edge also helps to direct water into your gutters or off your roof, it helps stop water from backing up under your shingles.  Drip edge also helps secure your underlayment and wind uplift around the perimeter of the roof as well.  Not all Denver roofing contractors use drip edge but we recommend it.  In fact we will typically upgrade you to a 2"x4" drip edge which has the added benefit of reaching secure decking when installed.  If you have any questions, please give us a call here at The Denver Roofing Company.

Roofing Shingles

Jack Core - Monday, October 27, 2014
There is a huge difference between a 3-tab shingle and a dimensional or architectural shingle.  The 3-tab shingles are prone to wind damage and due to there design and thickness are much more susceptible to hail damage.  The dimensional/architectural shingle is the only way to go and the cost difference is not that much of a difference.  For a standard dimensional shingle it may only cost a few hundred dollars more over the 3-tab roofing shingle.  The Denver Roofing Company can show you the differences and explain the importance of moving up to a much higher quality shingle.  Don't allow other roofing companies to upsell you into an upgraded shingle for $1,000 or more.  Call the Denver Roofing Company!

Some Roofing Tips by The Denver Roofing Company

Shingle roofs should always have a minimum of 5 nails per shingle.

The nails should be driven perpendicular to the roof deck and not angled.

The nails should always be in the shingle's strike zone.

Felt paper should be over the drip edge on eaves and under it on rakes.

Wood plank decking should not have gaps between the boards.

Starter shingles should be installed on all eaves and up rakes.

For ridge venting to ventilate properly you need soffit vents.
